Rackspace & Its Cloud Business Success

Rackspace Hosting, a managed hosting vendor has touched the $ 1 billion mark in revenues due to its cloud business. This is a first for the 12- year old company.Rackspace is reaping the benefits of its focus on the cloud hosting part of its business and is all set to grow even more with its full transition to the open source OpenStack model to which they have made pioneering contributions. For Rackspace, 2011 represents and absolute breakout year and they have accelerated revenue growth for the second year running.

The revenue growth for the year 2011 accelerated to 31 % from 24 % in 2010 and 18 % in 2009. The growth in their public cloud offering is a main reason for this growth. This sector of their business grew 88 % in the year 2011 and is now more than 20 % of the Rackspace total revenue.

OpenStack is all set to become a key component of their business. This open cloud platform was co- founded with NASA and has more than 140 vendors in its eco system including big names like Dell and Cisco.
