The internet freedom wars seem to have begun in all seriousness with SOPA/PIPA coming into prominence. The protests against SOPA and PIPA internet censorship legislation were pretty successful. Following these protests, the Department of Justice pulled the shutters down on a file sharing site called MegaUpload. The reason for this action was that the site had violated copyright laws and was trading in copyrighted television shows and movies too. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation this is a “terrifying precedent” and is a mark of the application of international criminal procedures to internet policy.
MegaUpload was indicted by a grand jury and after this, the federal agents arrested 4 people, acted upon more than 20 search warrants within and outside the country and captured 18 domain names, servers and assets worth $ 10 million.
The criticism comes from many angles since the federal action occurred even without SOPA attaining Law status.
One major fallout of such action is the huge attack launched on the websites of the FBI and The Department of Justice by hackers.
