Ciena’s SDN Strategy

July 5, 2012 1 Comment »

The growth of network fabrics has been phenomenal in the recent past. As the shift from legacy networks to cloud ready data center networks takes place, every network vendor has crafted a fabric vision. Ciena is one such vendor which has come up with a campaign titled “data center without walls”. The foundation of this campaign is SDN or software defined networking. The company has put together packet optical platforms, interfaces and programmable modulation.

Some of the instances of use of the programmable modulation are in workload balancing, resource management for disaster recovery and traffic management, especially when unforeseen loads enter the network. One of the bigger uses of SDN lies in the interconnection of clouds.

The cohesion between virtual machines, networks and computing goes into the creation of a larger virtual cloud entity from connected clouds. Even though Ciena has not been on the radar as far as enterprise network vendors go, it does have an impressive client list in various industries.
