In a rather surprising move, VMware has asked to be allowed into the OpenStack Foundation. Considering the fact that OpenStack is an open source venture and does almost all of what VMware’s proprietary software does this is a move that needs a bit of thought. There are a few aspects to this move that make it rational. OpenStack is not direct competition to VMware. The former is concerned with managing virtualized computing, storage and networking resources. It does not actually do the virtualizing by itself.
VMware is also busy looking beyond the server virtualization in which it holds sway. Software defined data center is becoming a big focus for companies like VMware and OpenStack is, broadly speaking, working towards providing a common framework for the functioning of the software defined data center.
VMware has also executed some strategic acquisitions in the recent past which might propel it towards becoming a part of the OpenStack “world”. For instance, VMware has acquired Nicira which has helped build open source projects.
