Bringing together elements such as computing services, cloud, utility and grid is what is going to shape the data center of the future. Converged infrastructure also known as unified computing and integrated systems seem to be making a huge appearance everywhere and even though it means a complex system of elements, customers do not seem to be fazed by it. In the last decade or so things have not changed too much but new technologies like automation and virtualization have worked towards reducing the dependence on legacy infrastructure and slim budgets.
Converged infrastructure has grown to occupy 6% of the data center spending today and predictions about its growth see it at 50% over the last year. Companies such as Cisco and HP are some of the big names in this space.
Such a unified computing approach can help flatten data center architectures and can also prove to be the first step towards SDN or software defined networking.
