Recently, Greenpeace has been in the news for its Green IT considerations and their war against data centers and companies like Apple have been in the firing line for their use of coal power for their data center operations. A couple of problems with Greenpeace here is their absolutist attitude to cleaning up the industry and Green IT and their own use of the many “polluting” technologies too.Greenpeace wants the change to happen post haste which is not possible in the real world. On one hand, Apple bashing happens on a regular basis, but Greenpeace personnel do use the various Apple products. One of its other complaints is about data centers using coal power, but Greenpeace USA has some of its own servers in nuclear and coal facilities.
More renewable energy is fine, but very few countries may have the resources required to generate such energy at a viable cost. Power has always been a game changer and examples of countries like Japan and Germany looking at coal and gas plants is a case in point.
