Virtualization technologies are not created equal. Looking at the past ten years, IT managers have had a successful time with virtualization to help them consolidate their servers. A few of them managed to bring down their machines to 1/10th the original number. After full virtualization, the servers functioned to almost full capacity and were also bigger. Added benefits were decreased costs and increased efficiencies.
But while virtualization for servers was a great success, the same success was not repeated for desktops. Here, it led to more complexity and very little ROI. VDI or Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure held out the promise of reduced costs of ownership and security. The primary vendors in this space like Citrix, Microsoft and VMware were confident about delivering these benefits.
While this sounds good, the other issues have caused the “less than desirable results” of desktop virtualization. Hardware costs are to be dealt with. Service levels are also an issue to contend with. ClearCube has tried to address the issue of complexity in this space with an elegant but slightly expensive option.
