Virtualization Can Help Federal Savings

Virtualization has been a huge boon in savings for the federal government. Government IT departments are taking to virtualization mainly to meet data center consolidation goals. By 2015, this move should help them save more than $ 30 billion. The few challenges that they face on the way are lack of funding and technical challenges among all levels of government. Federal, state and local governments are increasingly adopting virtualization. The federal government has been the most active in implementing virtualization.

All these findings and more were revealed in the study conducted by MeriTalk. The document titled “Virtualization Vacuum: The 2012 Government Virtualization Study” shows that the main challenge to faster adoption of the technology is the migrating of legacy apps to a new virtualized environment.

Other challenges are the requirements of technical support and network security. Server virtualization is ahead of desktop virtualization. 82 % and 77% of federal and state IT agencies have already implemented the former.
