The race to produce ever more efficient data centers and optimized servers is on, and the focus now seems to shift to the very basics units of computer technology – namely storage devices, central processing units and so forth. It is not surprising that an agency which helped in the development and growth of the Internet is again at the forefront of this effort. DARPA or Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is pursing the PERFECT project – Power Efficiency Revolution for Embedded Computing Technologies.
One of the main aims of their research is to establish new benchmarks for the processing speeds from 1GFOPS/w to nearly 75 times.
Combined with the research and development going on in other companies related to production of non-volatile RAMs to replace hard disks and flash memories, this could certainly produce a sea change in the energy efficiency of computing devices and would go a long way to achieve goals such as energy consumption reduction, environment preservation and cost effectiveness.
