Rice University’s Research On Silicon Boon For Data Centers

Rice University is talking about its inexact computer chip which makes allowances for the occasional error and still delivers enhanced resource efficiency and power as well. The University has showcased the prototypes at the ACM International Conference on Computing Frontiers and has proved that the chip can function at 15 times more efficiency that current technology. For data center owners, this makes for extremely interesting news and applications indeed. The Rice University team has made silicon that allows for deviation around an average of 2.5% and reduces energy demand by around 3.5 times.

In terms of speed and size, the chips also proved to be 7.5 times faster as well. For green data center operations, this can mean immense savings on overall energy management. The first waves of application of these chips are likely to be in areas like portable electronic devices and other application specific processors. The chip’s ability to account for error correction will find increasing use.
