Lithium Ion Battery Finding Its Way Into Data Center Operations

February 9, 2012 No Comments »

Even though it is a slow trend, the lithium ion battery has started finding its way into the data center.  Lead acid batteries have never really been known for their green considerations. Neither lead nor acid are good for the environment. Lead acid batteries also need to either be topped off with water every few years or completely replaced.

Super Micro Computer has rolled out their redundant battery backup UPS module for server and storage operations just last week. By placing the backup solution at the rack or server level, the company assures the user of lower power consumption primarily through enhanced power efficiency.

With this solution, one can put in a hot- swappable module to deliver output power in 1200W/1.5 minutes or 1000W/3 minute options. These modules have the latest lithium ion cell technology which includes 12C/Smart battery monitoring through remote management.

Sony also has a lithium ion battery solution. Its ESP 2000 stores up to 2.4 kWh of power and can support a load of up to 1000VA.
