Juniper is coming up with an open source alternative to VMware and Cisco SDN controllers. According to the company, data center and campus networks are the areas where there is plenty of short term benefits of software defined networks. Juniper is working with partners to bring out an open course SDN controller which will function as a de facto standard. Even though there are other such controllers right now they have yet to attain a prominent status. For Juniper, it is all about developing a standard that will be available across companies and will support a broad set of capabilities.
Juniper’s SDN strategy includes OpenFlow support to select products and is concentrating on the data center space since the infrastructure is geographically focused. Even though the Juniper product will support the OpenFlow protocol, it will not be founded upon it.
For the company, the disruptive nature of their product means an opportunity to change the way the market functions.
