GenNext Data Centers Need Scalable Throughput

October 3, 2012 Comments Off

Handling network traffic is going to be one of the most critical areas of data center management. In the near future, IT managers will need to deal with the fallout of new technologies and growth in demand for data as well. Technologies like cloud computing, big data management, server virtualization and convergence of technology has caused an unprecedented growth in the demand on data centers. This concern was apparent in the results of a study commissioned by Emulex Corp, a storage networking vendor. The study found out that by the year 2016, half of all IT departments will need to scale networks to 100Gbps. 76% of the respondents stated that network I/O is their biggest holdup and 70% put this as a high priority.

Network I/O also became an important factor for people who said that a single physical server can run as many as 100 virtual servers. A little above half the respondents stated that cloud computing has increased the need for network bandwidth.
