EMC has changed from being a storage company to an information company and in the next ten years or so is set to become a data center infrastructure company. When asked about whether EMC was still a storage company given factors like revenue leadership in Backup and Recovery from BRS and analytics from Greenplum and so on, Pat Gelsinger replied stating that EMC wants to be the most disruptive data center infrastructure company on their industry.
EMC has storage at the heart of its heritage and has also shipped a new storage offering with VFCache and announced another with Thunder. Aspects like virtualization, security, analytics will help in their data center footprint.
The competition, as far as EMC goes, lies in taking on bigger and broader IT players like server system vendors in the future. Huawei and Flash are threat areas of storage for EMC. EMC thus has to develop its own integrated stack offerings.
