SDN uses the OpenFlow standard to great effect. Dan Pitt, one of the experts in the data center industry states that OpenFlow is like the Android of software defined networking.

As the Executive Director of Open Networking Foundation, he is all for the use of SDN to decrease energy consumption. With revamped hardware being capable of delivering higher power savings and better ratio of compute and power, this is good news for the data center industry indeed.
