Apple’s data center facility in North Carolina will be driven by what is being dubbed as the country’s biggest solar array. As far as end user owned solar arrays go, the 20 MW, 100 acre project will deliver 42 million KWH of solar power every year. This makes it the country’s largest end user owned on- site solar array. The data center is coming up in Maiden, North Carolina and has already been awarded LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council. Considering that Apple has set its sights on running the facility with a large percentage of renewable energy in the mix, the LEED certification makes it unique too.
Apple has invested $ 1 billion in the 500,000 square foot data center that is making waves in the industry for its sheer size. Apple has been emitting huge quantities of green house gases and has eliminated 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by running a few of facilities on renewable energy.
