Processors
The solution is simple to data center’s energy and cooling problems; fix the culprit which resides within the server itself namely the processor. Walk up and down your data center hot aisle and you will find the result of many processors working and fans keeping them cool so that they can continue to do so. No surprise that the heat generated by the chip needs a source of cooling and a source to remove that heat from the data center. These cooling and ventilation sources along with the power used to keep the processor going are huge consumers of energy.
If the industry would simply create a processor solution that would utilize miniscule amounts of power and would require a miniscule amount of cooling then our energy and cooling problems would be solved. Well, we are not there yet, but it appears that the industry is VERY slowly responding and designing processors that require lower power. AMD in reviewing its roadmap for its processors announced that It will also allow for a new ultra-low power version of the Brazos chip known as “Hondo” that will require just 4.5 watts.
