SDN and ADC: Riverbed Networking Plans

August 8, 2012 Comments Off on SDN and ADC: Riverbed Networking Plans

SDN or software defined networking helps in creating new network flows by abstracting hardware. SDN goes way beyond switches and routers and can be deployed in areas like ADC or Application Delivery Controller and Web Content Optimization. This is made even more apparent with the business that Riverbed is into. This networking vendor has brought out its Stingray product stable which also has ADC capabilities.Riverbed had its origins with physical hardware to support its Steelhead WAN optimization technology which necessitated clients to have multiple devices on network connections.

The ADC is a single ended solution and is situated only in the data center. In such a scenario, software makes better sense.  Software based ADC is geared towards a world that is increasingly moving towards cloud and SDN too.

Riverbed is therefore furthering its plans for getting SDN to work for its platform. SDN will take off not just in the cloud but also in segments where IT is a service provider within the company or enterprise.
