According to IBM, hybrid computing is the natural evolution of the data center and the z114 mainframe will be the heart of the data center helping to control virtual and physical assets. While the company’s x86 business is very noteworthy, IBM also is accepting of the fact that the x86 architecture belongs in the data center. But the market for x86 is fragmented. Several vendors of Power or x86 processor platforms say that the apps should sit on a platform that is most apt for them.
This leads to two divergent thought processes. On one hand, there is a thought that users are turning to x86 as the end to end platform of choice and are relying on it to run mission critical apps as well. The other thought process is that the IBM mainframe will rule the roost as far as running mission critical batch processing on proprietary mainframes goes and x86 machines will run the non- business critical apps. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between.
In a survey conducted by BMC, 1300 firms responded to questions on plans for their platform. The survey highlighted the importance of the mainframe in driving business apps and service and being the critical platform for the ever evolving hybrid data center.
