Riverbed is making updates to its Granite server. Granite, a data center server and data consolidation software made its debut in the year 2012 when Riverbed brought out its Edge Virtual Server Infrastructure or Edge-VSI initiative. The new release is Granite 2.5 which helps consolidate even more servers and storage. It can also help centralize backup operations.
Granite could run snapshots and then move them to the data center for backup. Now it has a new GUI and scheduler that simplifies the branch backup to the data center. The one significant change that has happened is the ability of the product to support Fiber Channel storage.
The previous version could support only iSCSI storage. Hardware support has also been bulked up with the new Steelhead EX1360 model. This model renders support for a maximum of 10TB storage. This means that Riverbed can now offer better storage and compute performance.
