Facebook OpenCompute Project Servers

July 31, 2012 Comments Off on Facebook OpenCompute Project Servers

The first set of innovative servers has been delivered to Facebook as part of its Open Compute project. Open Rack is set to help in solving many of the traditional problems associated with conventional data center racks. The innovative server racks have been work in progress for a while now and have helped in delivering results like reduced costs and better data center hardware. Open Rack is a test case for the Facebook approach to data center design.  Open Compute is a project that designs electrical subsystems, power supplies and motherboards.

The plans are for the racks to be in use from the year 2013. The rack design is freely available under an open source license. Facebook has collaborated with companies like Tencent and Baidu to help design the racks. There is a taller chassis for the racks and also makes components like CPU, network cards and hard drives accessible in an easier manner on the rack tray.
