Facebook has announced plans for a new mechanical system that will be deployed in its data centers. The company has also unveiled figures pertaining to its water efficiency usage for the very first time. It has achieved pretty strong levels of water efficiency in its Prineville data center. WUE or water efficiency usage looks at the amount of water that the data center uses for cooling purposes. The first Facebook data center of Prineville has achieved a WUE of 0.22 L/kWh. While WUE is still a nascent concept, Facebook has achieved this by deploying a built up penthouse which takes in outside air and uses it completely.
This 100% use of outside air economization is coupled with a humidification misting system and direct evaporation cooling. Conventionally, data centers do not do outside air economization relying instead on recirculating the air within to cool down the servers. Since this mechanical system of Facebook does not need cooling towers or chillers, it has contributed to better water efficiency.
