The pursuit of the more intelligent data center has led companies like Microsoft to look at various angles. One of the results has been computational demand response. According to Microsoft, this could help decrease data center emissions by 99%. Companies like Google and Facebook have come up with data center facilities that operate on cutting edge technology and save tons of energy. There is also the use of energy management software and buying carbon offsets and then there is math. Which is what Microsoft has used.
The company has come up with 2 algorithms that can go a long way in helping data center operators forecast the cheapest times on the grid. This can result in a readjustment of customer behavior accordingly.
Basically, it has to do with renewable electricity penetration. At the highest levels of penetration, the prices of electricity reduced significantly. And it therefore made sense to carry out computational activity during these times.
